Smaller parts ship by parcel carrier. Tanks and cages ship by freight, and the carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window. Freight cost depends on your site access, so we confirm the charge and your final total before you send payment.

Sizing a residential propane tank

The right home tank comes down to two questions: what does it feed, and how often do you want a delivery truck in the drive. A tank that only runs a cooktop or a fireplace can be small; one that carries central heating through winter needs enough capacity that you are not watching the gauge every fortnight.

As a working rule, 120 gallons suits a single appliance such as a range, water heater or standby generator. Around 250 gallons handles supplemental heating plus appliances. A 325 gallon tank is the bridge size for larger homes with several gas appliances. Homes that heat entirely with propane usually belong one category up, in our 500 gallon and larger commercial range.

All residential tanks here are new, certified vessels that ship empty; your propane supplier makes the first fill after a licensed installer sets the tank to NFPA 58 and your local code. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one - the installed cost difference is modest, deliveries get cheaper per gallon, and you gain reserve for outages.
