How it works

Propane Tanks 4 Less nationwide delivery truck with safety certification
  1. Order

Choose your tank and tick the add-ons you want: professional installation and the first fill. The bundle discount is applied in your cart.

  2. Delivery - empty

The tank ships empty by freight from our nearest yard. A propane tank cannot be transported full, and every tank arrives with no gas inside.

  3. Installation and inspection

A licensed installer sets the tank on its pad or in the excavation (underground tanks also get corrosion-protection anodes), runs the gas line and pressure-tests it. Many towns require a permit and an inspection at this stage.

  4. Leak check and purge

Before any propane goes in, the supplier checks the whole system for leaks and makes sure the new tank is purged of air and moisture, which keeps the gas odorant working. When you order the first fill with your tank, this leak check is free.

  5. First fill

The supplier fills the tank to 80% of its capacity - the legal limit, leaving room for the propane to expand - then lights pilots and checks appliances. Someone usually needs to be home.

When is the tank filled? Never on delivery day, and not the moment it is installed. Expect the first fill within a few days to two weeks of installation, once every safety step above is complete - a little longer for underground tanks or where your town inspects the work. We contact you to schedule it.

First-fill prices and bundle savings

The fill is 80% of your tank's capacity, priced per gallon. Add it on any propane tank page (100 gallons and up), or in your cart.

Questions about refueling

Can the tank be delivered already full?

No. Propane tanks are shipped empty - a bulk tank cannot travel full by freight. It is filled on site once it has been installed and passed its safety checks.

How soon after installation is the tank filled?

Usually within a few days to two weeks of installation. The fill can only happen after the gas line has passed its pressure test, any required inspection is signed off and the supplier has completed a leak check; permits, inspector schedules and winter delivery routes are the usual causes of delay. Underground tanks often take a little longer because the excavation is inspected before it is backfilled.

Why is the fill 80% and not 100%?

Propane expands as it warms. Safety codes limit a bulk tank to about 80% of its capacity, measured by a fixed gauge on the tank, so a 500-gallon tank takes 400 gallons and a 1,000-gallon tank takes 800.

How do the bundle discounts work?

Order a tank with a first fill and you save 5% on the tank and fill. Order a tank with installation and a first fill and you save 10% on all three. The discount is applied automatically in your cart; delivery is not discounted.

Are there leak-check or new-account fees?

Not when you order the first fill with your tank. Many propane suppliers charge a new customer for the safety leak check and for opening an account; both are included free with a first fill ordered together with your tank.

What if the fill cannot go ahead?

If the tank cannot be filled - for example the site does not pass inspection - the amount you paid for the first fill is refunded.

Can I use my own propane supplier instead?

Yes. The first fill is optional. Without it, any licensed propane supplier can fill your tank once it is installed and tested.
