Service / vapor withdrawal valve
The vapor outlet your installer connects the first-stage regulator to.
Pressure relief valve
Required safety device. Vents to atmosphere if tank pressure rises above the set point, then reseats.

Dial gauge reading tank level as a percentage of capacity.
Liquid withdrawal valve
Draws liquid propane rather than vapor, for transfer and high-demand liquid service.
Vapor return valve
Returns vapor to the delivery vehicle during filling and relieves pressure back to another vessel.

About the 120 UnderGround Propane Tank ASME

120 UNDERGROUND TANKS

120 UnderGround Propane Tank PRICES INCLUDES INSURANCE AND SHIPPING COST

Tank PartDescription and Function
Liquid Withdrawal ValveA tube that dips into the liquid propane.

Used to empty the tank before service or transportation or to refill a portable propane tank.

Vapor Return ValveA safety device that controls the pressure of the tank.

If the tank becomes too pressurized, the return valve will open to release the gas or direct the propane back into another storage container.

Float GaugeA device that floats atop the liquid propane and measures the approximate percentage filling the tank.
Fixed Level Liquid GaugeA tube that helps propane delivery personnel know when the tank has reached its maximum fill.
Service ValveThe part of the tank that allows propane to flow into a home’s pipes as fuel.

You can shut off this valve in the event of a leak or emergency.

Safety Relief ValveA spring-like device that keeps the tank from building up excess pressure.

Opens up under high pressure to prevent the tank from bursting.

Fill ValveA hose fitting that delivery personnel use to fill up the propane tank.

Fill valves have gaskets and caps to prevent debris from entering the tank and gas escaping.

Before jumping into size options for your propane tank, note that tanks can only hold 80% of their capacity. For example, a 2,000-gallon tank holds 1,600 gallons when full.

Propane liquid expands as the temperature increases, so this design feature allows for swelling and prevents the tank from bursting. You’ll encounter the 80% rule no matter what size tank you select.

What a buried 120 gallon tank is for

At 120 gallons this is the smallest tank most installers will bury, and it suits a household running one or two appliances - a range and a water heater, a garage heater, or a standby generator - where the point is not to look at a tank in the garden. Buried, it is out of sight and out of the weather; only the dome sits at ground level for filling and for the gauge.

Condition and what arrives

This is refurbished stock, not a new vessel: it has been professionally serviced, fitted with new valves and volume gauges, stripped of paint and rust, given new domes and data plates, and pressure tested before sale. It is an ASME vessel and ships empty, as every tank must - a licensed installer sets it and a licensed propane supplier makes the first fill on site. Because condition varies between individual refurbished tanks, call us if you need the exact valve configuration on the one you are buying confirmed before you order.
