250 gallons - about 200 usable at the 80% fill line - is the step up from cylinders to a proper stationary supply. It is the right size for a smaller home on propane heat, or for a larger home running hot water, a kitchen range, a pool heater or a standby generator without putting those on a tank that needs refilling every few weeks. It is also the smallest horizontal tank most suppliers will deliver into, which matters when you want bulk pricing rather than exchange pricing.
An above ground installation needs a level pad and clear access, not an excavator. That keeps the installed cost well below the buried equivalent, keeps the valves and gauge where you can read them, and makes service straightforward. Setbacks from buildings, property lines and ignition sources follow NFPA 58 and your local code - your installer will site it accordingly. If you would rather the tank were not visible, the 250 gallon underground version is the same capacity buried.
